Active Travel Data Visualisation

Ipsum Traffic™ is a powerful Active travel data visualisation platform to communicate the benefits and challenges of walking, cycling and other forms of active mobility. It can help to raise awareness, inform policy, inspire action and monitor progress. In this blog post, I will share some examples of how active travel data visualisation can be used for different purposes and audiences, and provide some tips and resources for creating your own visualisations.

One of the main uses of Ipsum Traffic™ active travel data visualisation is to show the current state and trends of active travel in a city, region or country. This can help to identify gaps, opportunities and best practices, as well as to compare different places and modes.

Another use of Ipsum Traffic™ active travel data visualisation platform is to illustrate the potential impacts and benefits of active travel on health, environment, economy and society. This can help to make the case for investing in active travel infrastructure and promotion, as well as to motivate individuals to change their travel behaviour.

These are just a couple of the ways that Ipsum Traffic™ active travel data visualisation can be used to communicate and advocate for active travel.

When designing Ipsum Traffic™ our engineers engaged with Senior Traffic Engineers from around the world and developed the following success criteria from their feedback:

·         Define your purpose and audience: What do you want to achieve with your visualisation? Who do you want to reach? These questions will help you to choose the most appropriate type, format and style of visualisation for your message.

·         Use reliable and relevant data: Data is the foundation of any visualisation, so make sure you use data that is accurate, up-to-date and relevant for your purpose.

·         Follow good design principles: A good data visualisation should be clear, accurate, attractive and easy to understand. To achieve this, you should follow some basic design principles, such as choosing appropriate colours, fonts, scales and labels, avoiding clutter and distortion, and highlighting the most important information.

·         Test and refine your visualisation: Before you publish or share your visualisation, you should test it with your intended audience or some other feedback providers. Ask them if they understand what your visualisation is showing, if they find it interesting and engaging, and if they have any suggestions for improvement. Based on their feedback, you can refine your visualisation until you are satisfied with the result.

Ipsum Traffic™ has been deployed by Local Authorities and Highways Agencies across Ireland, UK, Europe, USA and Australia enabling the end user to access traffic data across the 7 classes,  including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, cars, vans, short trucks, long trucks/buses, in real-time and also generate historical trend reports.
