Smart Ring Buoy Sensor

Intuitive Innovation

DId you know?? Over 600 Life-Saving Ring Buoys go missing in every year, in just Dublin City alone.

In partnership with Water Safety Ireland, Civic have designed a one-of-a-kind soultion to this problem faced by every Local Authority in Ireland & beyond. Using a combination of Software, Hardware & Internet of Things development, Civic have designed an incredibly easy-to-use system that reports when these Life Saving Ring Buoys go missing from thier housings and need to be replaced.

Our solution was initially proposed to the National Public Service Innovation Fund as part of a call for solutions to address this countrywide problem. It is now being rolled out in several Local Authories including Fingal, Dun Laoghaire, South Dublin, Waterford, Limerick, Meath, Sligo, Laois & many more….

How It Works…

  • Ring Buoy Sensor under a Ring Buoy

    Ring Buoy is Present

The sensor is hidden at the bottom of the ring buoy housing and uses pressure to determine its presence. There is a small spring within the housing of the Ring Buoy Sensor which has been calibrated to compress under the weight of a Ring Buoy and this confirms that a Buoy is present at this location.

  • Ring Buoy Sensor Decompressed

    Ring Buoy is Missing

When the buoy is removed, the spring is decompressed and an alert is monitored within the sensor for the change in status. The system will wait a programmable amount of time for the Ring Buoy to be returned to the housing before determining that the location should be marked as ‘Missing’

  • Authorities are Alerted

Each Ring Bouy owner is then notified that the Ring Buoy in this location is missing. Alerts are sent from the sensor via NB-IoT (powered by Vodafone) to the Civic Ipsum cloud server. Alerts are then sent to relevent authorities through SMS, Email or by updating the Ipsum Online Map.
